Car Insurance Information for Cars Stored in Rhode Island
Technically all cars registered in Rhode island must have insurance, even while they are stored. But the Rhode Island DMV’s lack of technology and inefficient business practices make it difficult for the DMV to know if you canceled your auto insurance coverage after you register a vehicle. Basically Rhode island has almost no way of knowing if your vehicle is insured after it is registered, unless your insurance company notifies them (or you are stopped by the police while driving). Although we do not recommend doing this, you could get away with cancelling your insurance during storage until the Rhode Island DMV catches up with modern technology.
After your car is out of storage and back out on the road consider discount auto insurance for your vehicle.
Tips for lowering you Insurance during car storage:
Some insurance companies will remove liability coverage and allow you to only carry fire and theft. Each company will very. Also, you can try to reduce liability down to bare minimum or increase your deduct-able.
And keep this in mind. If you cancel your insurance your future rates will almost always be higher. Usually after 6 months or so of not having auto insurance an insurance company will consider you a higher risk, unless you maintain an insurance policy for another vehicle.
- Can an un-registered car still be covered by an insurance policy? usually
- Do unregistered cars pay taxes? If you cancel your plates in Rhode Island you must send them to the DMV using registered mail with a return receipt. You will need the plate cancellation receipt to avoid paying city or town property tax.
- How do you cancel your plates in Rhode Island? (From RI DMV gov site) The DMV requires you to surrender your license plates upon cancellation. Mail the canceled plates to the Division of Motor Vehicles Attn: Plates, 600 New London Avenue, Cranston RI 02920. The DMV recommends using registered mail with a return receipt request. This plate cancellation receipt is the proof you’ll need to avoid future property tax claims if your city or town neglects to remove you from their records. Registration refunds are not issued unless you have a full year remaining on a two-year registration. In order to claim the refund, you must fill out the refund application form. If the vehicle was leased, the refund form must be completed by the leasing company.
- What if my plates were lost or stolen? If plates where lost or stolen it must be reported to your local police department, and you must submit the police report to the DMV to obtain a cancellation receipt.
Plates may be canceled at any DMV branch location or AAA location ( members only).
